Many of these people are widows and single moms who lost their husbands during the genocide. During the last meeting one of the villagers said “please do not forget us.” It really hit me. He could have meant meant it in a “oh woh is me” kind of way. But I prefer to think he was trying to lay a guilt trip on me so that I will work hard! Damn effective!

The Forest Peoples Project’s long-term goal is improved social, economic and environmental conditions for indigenous and tribal forest peoples. FPP is working towards this goal by helping forest peoples defend their rights, develop sustainable livelihood skills, engage with policy makers and strengthen their organisational capacity.

WE-ACTx is an international community-based initiative that was launched in fall 2003 by front line AIDS physicians, activists and researchers with extensive experience in caring and advocating for HIV-positive women. Its primary goal is to increase women’s and children’s access to HIV testing, care, treatment, support, education and training in resource-limited settings at the grassroots level. WE-ACTx is committed to helping survivors of genocidal rape and sexual violence.
